History of Bingo

The earliest game of bingo was played in Italy in 1530 and was called lotto. It was a type of national lottery back then, and was played every week. By the early 1700s, the game had spread to France wherein it was called “Le Lotto”. By the 1800s, the Germans were using it as a tool to teach children counting and mathematics. The game changed to what we now know as Bingo when it reached the U.S. in the 1900s.

Bingo derived from the word Beano. Beano was a game very similar to the Bingo we now know, and was played at carnivals. Beans were used to mark the numbers on the card, hence it was called beano. The story goes that one player got so excited when he won that he got tongue-tied and instead of calling out ‘beano’, he called out ‘bingo’ instead, and thus bingo stuck.

In the US, the game remains much the same, although Bingo cards are now electronically printed in 5 rows x 5 columns with numbers ranging from 1 to 75. While in the UK, bingo cards are printed in 3 rows x 9 columns with blank spaces so that not every cell has a number on it. Australia and New Zealand bingo games are played exactly in the same way as in the UK, however instead of bingo, they may call the game Housie.

Of course, the game now uses marker pens or bingo daubers instead of beans as a means of marking the numbers, and the game has also opened up in the online community, greatly increasing the number of people playing Bingo worldwide.

Bingo as an Educational Tool

The game of bingo is known as a recreational and gambling game. But did you know that bingo can also be used as an educational tool? Variations of the standard bingo game are made to fit the teaching needs of the teachers, and they are then applied to a classroom setting. Among the subjects it can teach are reading, math, vocabulary, and foreign languages.

Some examples of these variants are as follows:

Sight word bingo – Used to teach children reading skills. The teacher calls out a word and the students look for the corresponding word printed in their bingo sheet.

Math Bingo – Instead of using regular bingo numbers, they are replaced by answers to math problems. The teacher calls out the math problem and the students look for the answer.

Foreign Language Bingo – The bingo cards are printed with particular foreign words and the teacher calls out the words in English. The students try and translate the words in foreign language and look for the answer in the cards.

There are many more educational variants of bingo. Talented teachers can make up as many variations of bingo games as they can that will effectively teach their students the lesson they want them to learn. There are also pre-printed educational games that can be bought online and in stores, but they may be expensive and the teacher will not have total control over the content of these games. A cheaper alternative is to just print out the bingo worksheets on your computer, thereby saving on expenses. This also allows you to design the game based on your lesson plan.

Bingo as a Fundraiser

Looking to raise funds for your favorite charity? Or perhaps raise money for your school or church? Holding a bingo game is one way to raise money. It is both a fun and popular game that draws a mix of people together. You can hold regular bingos with cash prizes or “basket bingos”, where gift baskets go to the winners. You can even combine the two to make it more exciting for the players.

Planning a bingo event starts with asking yourself how much you’d like to raise and how many people you intend to attract to participate in your event. Once you’ve determined how much you need, you can pretty much determine a ballpark figure for how many people you need to attract in order for your fundraiser to be successful. As a benchmark, aim for at least 100 players or more – as most successful bingo events have drawn crowds from 100 to 300. But bingo games with fewer players can still be successful as long as you plan well and keep a good budget.

Once you have a rough idea of what you want to do with your event, you need to be aware if there are licensing regulations required for holding bingo games in your area. Some states or localities pretty much leave bingo unregulated while some require a license, paperwork, and some more rules. You should check up on this first before you begin buying supplies for your bingo game.

Once you’ve cleared the necessary paperwork, if there is any, you can begin building your bingo program. Typical bingo programs include early bird games, regular games, and special prizes or jackpots throughout the rounds.

Once you’ve done this, it’s just a matter of determining your prize payouts. A good rule of thumb is to have bingo prizes totaling to 75% of bingo revenue.
